Joyeuses Pâques à tous!

Happy Easter! and ¡Feliz Pascua a todos!

An update from Mrs Abbott, Subject Leader – Languages

Learning a foreign language is not just about the language, or it shouldn’t be.  The culture of the country or countries where the language is spoken is just as important.  At the end of every Spring Term in KS2, I take full advantage of this to talk about the traditions celebrated in other countries, especially France and Spain.

From flying bells in France delivering their sweet chocolate treats on Easter Sunday to the special Easter cake in Spain, known as las monas de Pascua (which will provide all your Easter calories in one fell swoop!) the children have been embracing what Easter means for others.

Whether through the discovery of why the French are April fish rather than April fools or through the Spanish spectacle of the very daunting, mournful Easter processions on Good Friday and the more joyous, uplifting Easter Sunday parades, I hope that your child will come home with a deeper understanding of how others celebrate traditions, a more rounded acceptance of other people’s beliefs and an excitement about their own Easter holiday customs.

They may also have a foreign-language Easter card to proudly present to you!
